5 years ago Bianca and I completed an applied business course at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa a year after starting Attraction Studio. We had ideas of what we wanted to do and what we wanted Attraction Studio to become, but we knew, like many other small businesses, that to succeed we needed a little help, a push in the right direction and a lot of good advice from people that have been there. This course and our tutor Hamish Anderson gave us all of this. He pushed us to think differently about our business, created plans and ideas and processes we still follow to this day. We learnt from the other businesses there as well as some great presenters on everything from HR to insurance and marketing to accounting.
For the past few years Bianca and I have had the pleasure of being one of these speakers and presenting a branding seminar to the Te Wānanga Business class students. It’s a pretty great feeling helping people understand the importance of branding when it comes to starting a business.
We always start with a great quote from Jeff Bezos,
“Branding is what people say about you when you’re not in the room”.
In a nutshell, a brand isn’t just your logo, it’s not even your website; it’s all of these things and more. It’s your staff, it’s the brainstorming session you have about your next ad campaign, it’s your receptionist greeting your customers as they walk into your store, it’s that Instagram story you put out into the world, it’s a magazine ad, it’s your letterhead and business card, it’s... any action you take to shape your brand.
So if branding is what people say about you when you’re not in the room, what are they saying about yours?
